Gothic Basin, WA September 11 2013, 0 CommentsLast weekend we made a trek with Andy's older brother to an old mining area in the North Cascades. Our journey began on Monte Cristo Road, which was once lined with the shacks and man camps of prospectors. After about a mile of easy walking we reached our trail which contained 14 switchbacks and three spectacular waterfall crossings before arriving in Gothic Basin. Immediately upon our arrival in the basin we were surrounded by quickly moving fog, hidden tarns, mysterious pools of water and spiraling mountain peaks.

About an hour outside of Santa Fe, New Mexico is an amazing collection of wavey beige canyon walls and one-shaped rock formations called the Tent Rocks. We recently had the opportunity to day hike in this spectacular geologic scenery and completely fell in love with the place.

If you go to the website for the Mt. Baker Ski Area between November and April, it usually says something like "THE STORMS HAVE ARRIVED!!! WE HAVE FRESH POWDER!!!" and every once in a while, there's a break in the layers of passing clouds for a good snowshoe. Last week we went out with our buddy Patrick to check out Artist Point at the end of Highway 542 in the North Cascades, and were treated with the best Alpine views we've seen in months. At the beginning of October, we escaped the city for some cabin time in the North Cascades. It turned out to be the last week of a long and much appreciated Indian Summer in the Pacific Northwest.
